What do
you need to take good care of a Tibetan Terrier's coat!!
A
pinbrush wich is not too hard, and two combes. One fine, and
one with larger space between the pins, and a slicker brush
or the matzapper from Les Pooches.
It is
very important to start the brushing when your TT still is a
puppy. The advice is to practice every day with the pup for a
very short time.Put him on a steady table and start brush
the puppy kindly. If the pup behaves well,do stimulate this
behavior,by telling him he did so well,or give him a
treat.Do NOT overpractice the pup.Else it gets bored or
afraid.especialy in this age.Try to make the puppy used to
this, and you will be very glad you have done this in the
future.
Around
the seventh or eight month the TT will starts to loose his
puppycoat. This will differ for each TT.One will have more
undercoat as the other.THIS IS A CRUCIAL TIME!!.You have to
pay a lot of attention that the coat doesn't start to
mat.The best you can do is to brush him every two days with
first the brush, than the bigger comb, and at last the fine
comb,so you are sure the loose underwool will appear.Start
at the endings of the hair and work your way through untill
you are on the skin. This way the entire lenght is combed, and
loose underwool removed. The best is to spray the coat a bit
to moister it.This to prevent that you wil remove more hair
than necessary.Moistened hair is more elastic as dry hair.
There
are periods that a TT will loose more undercoat.Keep an eye
on it,as this period tend to differ.
Brushing
a grown TT twice a week can be sufficient.Moister the
coat.First the coat will be again brushed with the pinbrush, than
the bigger comb, and finisch with the fine comb.Allways start
the brushing from the endings of the hair(like you brush
long Human hair)towards the skin. The best position for you(and
the dog)is to lay him on its side. This way you can easily
reach the difficult spots such as the inside of the legs the
stomach elbows etc.I recommand you to brush your dog from
the bottom(stomach)toward to the top(back). If there are some
mats, hold them tight next to the skin in your hand while
trying to undo them,so you do not hurt the dog.
As well
the undercoat that differ for each TT,so does the
coatstructure also. Some TT's only need to be brushed once a
week, others need two or even three times a week if you don't
want mats. This is something you have to watch for yourselves.
To wash
a TT:Use a shampoo and conditioner for dogs.this is because
dogs have another PH level than humans do.Showpeople wash
their dogs 1 or two days before they go to a dogshow. This is
to make them look as optimal as possible for the
judging. When you do not show, wash a TT once every three
months or maybe every six months wil be sufficient.
